An account of the resource
In this three-page, handwritten letter by 12-year-old Alyssa O'Brien, the reader is introduced to a thoughtful young woman who has read several of Cormier's books twice or more in the interest of better understanding a book as time goes by. That she has a well-developed and agentive literate life is evident in her introduction where she identifies not only as a reader but as a writer. Furthermore, she carefully outlined a plan to introduce her friend, Chrissy, to Cormier's books. Her intent is to build Chrissy's readerly strength by prescribing an order - 8+1, and on finally ending with After The First Death at the very end.

Amanda Goetz, when she wrote this typewritten letter to Robert Cormier, was a freshman in high school. In this honest and well-written piece of correspondence, she attributes Cormier's novels as the factor that brought her back to reading. She related that, prior to reading his books, she had only read two books, period. She questions where the title came from for Tunes for Bears to Dance To.

In this letter from Anny Lee shares with Cormier her experience of reading After the First Death. She shares with the author how she felt his text was 'the weirdest, most confusing, and unique' book she ever read. Though she conveys how much she did not like the close analysis her class engaged in, she does say how interested she became in the characters and the plot.

Two seventh-grade girls wrote to Robert Cormier expressing admiration for his work, and some of their early confusion in reading his works, In the Middle of the Night, and We All Fall Down, especially his use of non-chronological narrative structure. They also ask questions that attempt to connect their observations of his writing with his personal life.

An account of the resource
Cindy Ryal's letter to Robert Cormier faded and word-processed, dated 12 May 1989 (and it shares most of its text with a letter to Cormier by Kristy). Cindy asks about After the First Death's characters and plot twists. She ends the letter saying her mother read it with her and together they enjoyed the heart-pounding suspense of the book.

Daniel Lowe's letter to Robert Cormier 20 April 2000
Description
An account of the resource
Daniel Lowe writes to Robert Cormier with questions he hopes to use in an author report. He asks if Cormier was bullied or a bully in his past and if he ever felt like the characters of The Chocolate War or Beyond the Chocolate War. He also asks for clarification on the ending of I Am the Cheese. Finally, Daniel asks if Cormier writes similar characters on purpose since Daniel thought Jerry Renault and Buddy were similar as were Harry Flowers and Archie Costello.

David Vilandre, Director of the Worcester County Young Writers' Institute, writes to Robert Cormier thanking him for his response to student questions on Fade. He encloses three student essays and questions on We All Fall Down regarding Harry's role as an antagonist and the separation of the novel into two parts. A brief mention of Vilandre's infant son reveals a personal connection between Vilandre and Cormier.

Description
An account of the resource
Denise discusses the frequent questions the students had after reading After the First Death and producing a newspaper with interviews of the characters. She mentions her teacher's (Mrs. Anti) diligence in answering their questions. However, she believes that the author holds the answers to a book's meaning. She also expresses the hope that Robert Cormier will visit their class since she, too, wants to be a writer.

Description
An account of the resource

This two-page, typed, undated fan letter to Robert Cormier comes from a high school student, Hall Alexander of Ottowa, Kansas. Hall is very caught up in We All Fall Down. He has questions about both events and characters and he has opinions, as well. He is not writing as part of a school project but appears to have written on his own. In many ways, Hall epitomizes the engaged reader.

Description
An account of the resource

In this short letter, Hugh Agee, an instructor at the University of Georgia, shares an article he wrote that explores student responses to After the First Death, specifically their questions regarding the narrative perspective. Agee shares with Robert Cormier his enjoyment of teaching the author's work, and his students' feelings that Cormier is "a major writer of Young Adult literature."
